A MIAM...

A MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting) is the first step in the family mediation process. It is a confidential, one-on-one meeting between an individual and a qualified mediator to assess whether mediation is the right approach for resolving their dispute.

Purpose of a MIAM:

Explain the Mediation Process – The mediator outlines how mediation works, what to expect, and the potential benefits of resolving disputes outside of court.

Assess Suitability – The mediator determines whether mediation is appropriate for the specific circumstances, ensuring it is safe and fair for both parties.

Explore Alternative Options – If mediation is not suitable, the mediator provides information on other dispute resolution methods.

Legal Requirement – In the UK, attending a MIAM is mandatory before applying to court for family-related disputes, except in cases involving domestic abuse or other exemptions.

A MIAM is not a mediation session itself but an initial step to help individuals understand their options and decide the best way forward. If mediation is deemed appropriate and both parties agree, sessions will follow to work towards a resolution.
